Math Department
We live in a mathematical world. We rely on mathematical understanding in many different situations in the real world: deciding which item to purchase, choosing a cell phone plan, looking at tables and graphs in a newspaper or magazine, or trying to understand the massive amounts of information we see on a daily basis. Not only has the level of mathematical thinking and problem solving increased in everyday life, it has also increased in the workplace.
In our world and the world of tomorrow, those who understand and can do mathematics will have opportunities that others do not. Competence in mathematics opens doors to productive futures, while a lack of mathematical competence closes those doors.
Students have different abilities, needs, and interests, but all students need to be able to use mathematics in their personal lives, in the workplace, and in further study. All students deserve an opportunity to understand the power and beauty of mathematics. Students need to learn a new set of mathematics basics that enable them to compute fluently and to solve problems creatively and resourcefully.
