students learning

Grayslake D127 students, along with peers from nine area schools, stepped into the world of healthcare at Endeavor Health Science Discovery Day. It was a hands-on career exploration event to connect students with real-world medical experiences and professional mentorship.

With 14 interactive stations, students didn’t just learn about healthcare careers; they experienced them firsthand. From suturing and cardiac monitoring to pharmacology, sports medicine, and sterile operating room procedures, the event provided a deeper understanding of the diverse career paths available in healthcare.

“It’s one thing to learn about careers through a textbook, but today, students had hands-on experiences and direct mentorship that connected them with professionals in Lake County,” said Gina Schuyler, Administrator for Careers & Community Partnerships. “Whether students walked away more excited about a particular field or realizing it’s not for them, that’s a win because career exploration is about finding the right fit.”

A Partnership Built for the Future

The event is part of an ongoing partnership between D127 and Endeavor Health, College of Lake County (CLC), Tech Campus, University Center, and Lake County Workforce Development, designed to give students access to internships, career exploration, and direct industry connections.

These opportunities to engage with students are critical for Samir Desai, Vice President of DEI and People Strategy at Endeavor Health. “There are so many careers in healthcare that people don’t even know about,” Desai said. “The more we get out into schools and show students what’s possible, the more we can help them find their path.”

Students Gain Real-World Insight

For many students, the chance to interact with professionals and try out different medical skills was a highlight of the day.

“Talking with professionals who have already gone through the education process helped me understand the best path forward in college and career,” said Luis C., a student from Grayslake Central. “Plus, learning how to do stitches at the suturing station was so interactive because I actually got to practice a real-world skill.”

For Michaela G. of Grayslake North, the event opened her eyes to the wide range of healthcare careers beyond doctors and nurses. “I always thought of healthcare as just doctors and nurses, but today I learned about kinesiology, EMTs, occupational therapy, and so much more,” she said. “I can actually see myself in these fields now.”

Preparing Students for What’s Next

Grayslake D127 continues expanding opportunities that connect students with local industries, ensuring they graduate with real-world skills and a clear pathway to their careers. Events like Endeavor Health Science Discovery Day are just one example of how the district brings hands-on, high-impact learning to students.
