As Grayslake Central High School’s Class of 2025 prepares for tonight’s graduation ceremony, the stage will belong not just to those who cross it with caps in the air, but to three insightful voices. This year’s student speakers, Mackenzie Mertens and Andrew Graham, and staff speaker Steve Reitman, will offer reflections filled with meaning, heart, and hope.

“The Power of a Smile” — Mackenzie Mertens’ Message of Joy

For senior Mackenzie Mertens, stepping up to the podium is more than a personal honor; it’s a chance to give voice to the journey her class has taken together. A student council leader and event planner, Mackenzie has spent the year creating memories for others. Tonight, she’ll share what those moments taught her about connection.

Her speech centers on the quiet strength of a simple smile. “As freshmen, our smiles were hidden behind masks,” she explains. “Now, they’re out in the open, shared in joy, celebration, and belonging.”

Through every event, every hallway conversation, every moment of effort, Mackenzie saw what made this class special. “I hope we’re remembered for making everyone feel like somebody,” she reflects. “Because that’s what Grayslake Central is—a family.”

“Best Foot Forward” — Andrew Graham’s Tribute to Resilience

When Andrew Graham first saw the call for graduation speaker auditions, he saw an opportunity to step out of his comfort zone and represent the classmates who inspired him throughout high school.

Known for his involvement in theater, FBLA, and wrestling, Andrew will speak about the power of perseverance. “This class is filled with motivated individuals,” he says. “Whatever comes our way, we overcome it. And we always put our best foot forward.”

His message isn’t just about success, but about grit, growth, and leading by example. “I hope the Class of 2025 inspires the next generation by how we carried ourselves—working hard, lifting each other up, and never giving up.”

“Find the Joy” — Steve Reitman’s Encouragement for the Road Ahead

Steve Reitman, a Special Education teacher and girls basketball coach, was selected by the Class of 2025 as this year’s staff speaker, a choice he calls “a great privilege.”

In his message, he’ll honor the resilience of a class that started high school during a global pandemic and came out stronger for it. “They powered through tough transitions not just academically, but socially and emotionally,” he says. “And they did it with grace and grit.”

His parting advice? Simple, but powerful: “Life is short. Don’t take anything for granted. Make time to laugh, relax, and be with the people you love. Even if it’s just a few minutes a day, find the joy.”

The Legacy Continues

Grayslake Central’s graduation will be a celebration of voices. Voices that reflect courage, compassion, joy, and strength. As the Class of 2025 takes their final steps as Rams and their first into the future, they’ll do so with heads high, hearts full, and a legacy they can be proud of.

Congratulations, Class of 2025. Your story is just beginning.
