On September 17, Grayslake District 127 will host the Lake County Manufacturing Alliance for a tour of its manufacturing and technology labs—an opportunity to showcase how the district is preparing students for the future of work.
At the center of this effort is Gina Schuyler, CTE Department Chair for Careers and Community Partnerships. Schuyler has been a driving force in connecting classrooms to careers, building opportunities that give students both skills and confidence to explore high-demand industries.
Her leadership has been recognized across the county. In 2024, she received Lake County Partners’ inaugural Talent Advancement Award, celebrating her role in advancing career pathways for students. More recently, she was invited to contribute to the Lake County Partners blog, where she highlighted D127’s summer manufacturing camps and their role in inspiring students to see themselves in tomorrow’s workforce.
“These camps are about more than teaching skills,” Schuyler wrote. “They’re about building bridges—between schools, communities, and industries—so every student sees a place for themselves in the workforce.”
Camps That Spark Careers
Under Schuyler’s guidance, D127 has built one of the region’s most innovative summer manufacturing programs. Middle schoolers explore engineering and design through projects like creating custom light sabers and welding fire pits, while a new Inclusion Camp helps students with unique learning needs develop teamwork and problem-solving skills alongside hands-on technical experiences.
The camps also connect students with local employers through tours of facilities such as Laser Precision, Fischer Paper Products, and Gold Bond, Inc. “When students walk through a plant, they see how the things they build in our labs can translate into meaningful work,” said Manufacturing Instructor Chris Ellingsen. “It’s eye-opening and inspiring.”
Looking Ahead
The upcoming Manufacturing Alliance tour will bring business and community leaders into D127’s classrooms, underscoring the district’s role as a hub where education and industry meet.
“Gina’s work exemplifies our mission of empowering students through authentic learning,” said Superintendent Dr. Mikkel Storaasli. “She is opening doors not just for students, but for our entire community.”
A Lasting Impact
Beyond camps and events, Schuyler has championed initiatives such as the Illinois Career Pathway Endorsement and regional partnerships that expand internship opportunities for students. Her efforts have established D127 as a leader in career-connected education in Lake County and beyond.
At the heart of it all, Schuyler remains focused on students. “At the end of the day, this isn’t just about manufacturing,”she said. “It’s about showing students they belong in the future workforce—and giving them the tools to succeed.”
