Each November, Grayslake Central High School transforms into a place of reflection, gratitude, and community connection as students and staff come together to honor those who have served.

The Veterans Day Assembly and Breakfast has evolved into one of the school’s most cherished traditions, uniting generations for a powerful morning of remembrance and appreciation.

“It’s the best day of the year,” says Social Studies teacher and Key Club co-sponsor Jim Plaza. “It’s powerful for everyone involved.”

Instead of taking the day off, Grayslake Central leans into service. The day begins with a schoolwide assembly featuring a color guard, patriotic performances by the band and choir, and a keynote speaker who shares lessons of leadership, sacrifice, and service.

Veterans are then welcomed into a student-hosted breakfast in the gym, where they’re personally served by students from Key Club and the Public Service Practicum (PSP) class. These students arrive before dawn to set up tables, hang decorations, and prepare homemade placemats and “I Honor” cards that fill the walls.

“Our kids spend weeks preparing,” says Kristen Salmons, Special Education teacher and Key Club co-sponsor. “They take so much pride in creating something meaningful.”

For many veterans, the most memorable part of the morning is the standing ovation they receive as they exit the assembly.

“It’s emotional every year,” says Plaza. “The gratitude is real, and students can feel the impact of what they’ve done.”

More than 125 veterans attended last year’s breakfast, many accompanied by family members. Their feedback is consistent: They are deeply moved by the students’ thoughtfulness and effort.

“Simple gestures, like a handshake, a thank-you, a warm meal, go a long way,” says Plaza.

The entire event is made possible by the generosity of community partners. Local restaurants, businesses, and food service provider Quest donate breakfast items and supplies, helping ensure veterans feel truly honored.

“This is what community looks like,” says Salmons. “Everyone gives a little to make something unforgettable.”
