In Maggie Shore’s classroom, learning French was never just about vocabulary; it was about building confidence, making connections, and discovering new perspectives.
After 15 years at Grayslake Central High School, Shore is retiring, reflecting on a career shaped by meaningful relationships with both students and colleagues.
“The most meaningful parts of my time in the district have been the human connections I’ve made,” she shared. “There is something special about seeing a student find their voice, sometimes literally in a new language, between their freshman and senior years.”
That transformation is what made her time in the classroom so rewarding. Shore found daily inspiration in her students’ ideas, talents, and individuality, and she credits her colleagues, especially within the World Language department, for making her experience even more meaningful.
“I have been blessed to work with such an amazing group of colleagues,” she said. “They are bright, supportive, kind, and fun.”
Throughout her career, Shore encouraged students to see language learning as a gateway to the world.
“I hope I’ve left behind a legacy of passion and purpose,” she said. “I want my students to remember that learning a language is about opening doors, and I hope they felt seen and supported in my classroom.”
While some students have gone on to study language beyond high school or pursue opportunities abroad, Shore values every impact, big or small, that helps students feel connected and confident.
As she looks back, she offers simple advice for those continuing in education.
“Don’t lose sight of the ‘why,’” she said. “Focus on the students, stay flexible, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey.”
In retirement, Shore is looking forward to a slower pace and new opportunities to explore.
“I’m ready for a change of pace,” she said. “More time for walks in nature, learning, volunteering, and traveling, especially visiting my kids in D.C. and Boston.”
For Shore, the relationships built over the past 15 years will remain the most meaningful part of her time in D127.
