students presenting ai

District 127 is proud to celebrate the success of its pioneering summer learning initiative, designed to equip students with essential skills in artificial intelligence (AI). In collaboration with Inspirit AI, 26 students participated in a unique two-week course that delved into the fundamentals of predictive coding using Python, explored the moral implications of AI, and empowered students to create their own AI programs addressing broader social issues.

The course was made possible primarily due to a grant from NIU Edsystems focused on supporting the development of career pathways in IT. Guided by industry experts Roshan Ram and Mykhi Jones, students worked on innovative projects such as predicting the location of exoplanets, determining the likelihood of a song becoming a hit, and identifying undervalued baseball players using the Moneyball approach. These projects, presented at the end of the course, honed their technical skills and encouraged them to consider the broader implications of AI in various fields.

"Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of modern industry, and our schools work hard to keep up with relevant tools and skills," said Superintendent Mikkel Storassli. "By offering this course, we are ensuring our students are not just prepared for the future but are actively shaping it. The insights and skills they gained will be invaluable as they navigate the ever-evolving technological landscape."

Recent statistics highlight the growing importance of AI in today's world. According to a 2023 report by the World Economic Forum, 97 million new jobs involving AI will be created by 2025, while McKinsey Global Institute predicts that AI could potentially add $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030. These figures underscore the relevance and timeliness of District 127’s initiative to integrate AI education into our students' learning experiences.

Tracey Landry, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation in District 127, emphasized the district's commitment to forward-thinking education. "I was inspired by the students’ presentations at the end of the course. It’s clear this course struck a chord with them, and our students quickly and expertly connected the technology to passion areas across a wide range of industries. Opportunities like this pave the way for our students to excel and lead in a technology-driven world."

As AI continues to integrate into all fields and industries, District 127 is at the forefront of preparing students to navigate and succeed in this evolving landscape. By offering such innovative learning experiences, we ensure that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the future.
