erin mihelich winning award for IDEA educator of the year

Grayslake North High School architecture and engineering teacher Erin Mihelich has been named the Illinois Design Educators Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year, a statewide honor that recognizes her dedication to real-world learning and student achievement.

A former professional architect, Mihelich brings industry experience to her classroom, where students explore everything from 2D and 3D drafting to civil engineering and architectural design. Now in her second year at Grayslake North, she was surprised by the recognition.

“I thought I was just nominated,” she said. “Then I got the follow-up email: ‘Actually, you won.’ It was a total surprise.”

The award highlights Mihelich’s impact in and beyond the classroom. Her students regularly compete in regional and state drafting contests, gaining confidence and recognition for their skills. Many also earn dual credit through Grayslake North’s partnership with the College of Lake County.

“More than anything, this reflects my students’ enthusiasm,” Mihelich said. “They take real pride in their work, and it shows.”

Mihelich’s journey to education began after a successful career in architecture. Through a special licensing path for professionals, she transitioned into teaching and quickly discovered a passion for guiding students, especially those who might be the first in their families to consider technical or design careers.

Her classroom embodies the mission of Grayslake District 127 by delivering relevant, engaging, and authentic learning every day. It’s a space where students develop curiosity, connect their creativity with real-world applications, and gain confidence in their abilities. Mihelich is deeply invested in their growth, and it shows. Mihelich also creates an inclusive space where more young women feel welcome and confident exploring STEM pathways.

“I’m seeing more girls in my classes every year,” she said. “That matters.”

Grayslake District 127 celebrates Mihelich’s commitment to empowering learners and launching futures, one project, one student at a time.
